In combination with metal atoms that gain one or more valence electrons to achieve octet structure, they form ionic compounds. Group 8A (18) elements already have an octet of valence electrons (two for helium), so they do not lose or gain electrons and are not normally found in compounds. True / False.

    The electrostatic attraction between the opposite charge, is called ionic bond.

    Ionic bonds are very strong, that's why melting point and boiling point is very high.

    Ionic bonds are also called the electrovalent bond. When a positively charged ion makes the bond with negatively charged ion, then ionic bond is formed.  The ions are formed a solid lattice, which is regular in pattern. Ionic bonds are very strong, that's why melting point and boiling point is very high. Basically ionic bond forms the ionic compound.

    Ionic compounds have some properties like: they are hard, form crystal lattice not molecules, conduct electricity in liquid medium, and high melting and boiling point, which makes the structure different.

    Explanation:

    As we know that metallic crystals are made up of only one kind of element.  A metal crystal is actually a huge sea of positive charges embedded in the layers of negative charges (electrons). The whole crystal is made up of same kind of atoms, e.g crystals of gold, crystals of iron.

    If we talk about structure of metallic crystal, it can be body centered cubic, simple cubic, hexagonal or close cubic packing.

    Now, coming towards the ionic crystals, we know that they are basically the crystals of ionic compounds like sodium chloride or cesium chloride. These crystals are formed due to ionic bonding between two or more than two kinds of elements/atoms. It is not possible for an ionic crystal to be composed of only one kind of atom. As far as structure is concerned, they can have different structure based on bonding between atoms in an ionic compound, e.g NaCl has octahedral geometry.

    Therefore, it is very evident that best option is A.

    Ionic compounds have very high melting points and boiling points. Solid ionic compounds cannot conduct electricity, because those ions are held in place. Hope this helps(:

    Dissociation of compound simply involves the splitting of ionic compounds into the individual ions that make up the compound. This can be seen when an acid dissolves in water as illustrated below:

    In this case we shall use H2SO4.

    H2SO4(aq) <==> 2H^+ + SO4^2-

    From the above illustration, we can see that the solvent (water) breaks the acid into the individual ions that makes up the acid.
