  1. The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution essentially gave the US president the power to use the military however he saw fit. This meant that the president could send troops wherever he wanted, as long as it was in the best interest/security of the United States. President Lyndon B. Johnson used this law to significantly increase the US presence in the Vietnam War.
