The Constitution plays a number of roles in our society today.  Let us look at two of the most important.

First, the Constitution serves as the “rule book” for our government.  It specifies what government can and cannot do.  We have seen this very recently in the Supreme Court case over whether “Obamacare” was justifiable under the Commerce Clause of the Constitution.

Second, the Constitution serves as a set of ideals that our society should live by.  People on all sides of political debates try to use constitutional ideals to defend their side of an argument.  For example, the Tea Party uses the idea of limited government to promote a reduction in the size of government while gay rights activists use the idea of equal protection and personal freedom to push for their goals.

The Constitution, then, is used both as a legal document and as a set of ideals in our society today.

The constitution is the base in which the government was formed, it is the guidelines that dictate the people's rights and freedoms.

The U.S. Constitution established America’s national government and fundamental laws, and guaranteed certain basic rights for its citizens. It was signed on September 17, 1787, by delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, presided over by George Washington. Under America’s first governing document, the Articles of Confederation, the national government was weak and states operated like independent countries. At the 1787 convention, delegates devised a plan for a stronger federal government with three branches–executive, legislative and judicial–along with a system of checks and balances to ensure no single branch would have too much power. The Bill of Rights–10 amendments guaranteeing basic individual protections such as freedom of speech and religion–became part of the Constitution in 1791. To date, there have been a total of 27 constitutional amendments. Hope this helps 🙂

The U.S. Constitution is the nation's fundamental law. It codifies the core values of the people. ... Rule of law is a principle under which all persons, institutions, and entities are accountable to laws that are: Publicly promulgated.

The constitution makes a more perfect union because everyone is treated as equals. No one is above anyone else, so conflicts won’t occur. Even the president has to pay taxes. The constitution also protects individual rights in the bill of rights that no one can take away.

The constitution unites the states because everyone has a set of rules to follow. Before the constitution was created, Britain was a monarchy, and the colonists didn’t like having no say in government. With a monarch, everyone is subject to the will of the king, and no one has a set of laws to follow. In this constitution, everyone has a set of specific laws to follow. Therefore, everyone is united.

The Constitution has three main functions. First it creates a national government consisting of a legislative, an executive, and a judicial branch, with a system of checks and balances among the three branches. Second, it divides power between the federal government and the states.
