    James Oglethorpe established Georgia as a US colony in 1732.  Initially, it was intended to be a refuge for indebted prisoners from London.  But, Georgia later served as a buffer territory to protect South Carolina and other southern colonies with able-bodied farmers.  They protected the southern colonies from Spanish invasion through Florida.
