You are curious about why you see people drinking shots of cold brew coffee before they work out. You design an experiment to study the relationship between caffeine and muscle contraction using a living nerve and muscle preparation. You find that adding caffeine to the solution bathing the tissues causes an increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentration in muscle fibers. Based on this finding, what effect do you predict caffeine will have on muscle contraction? Your answer should demonstrate an understanding of the role of Ca2+ in muscle contraction. Assume that ATP levels are sufficient for muscle contraction/relaxation and that the elevated Ca2+ does not activate proteases and lipases.

    Calcium is important element in the process of the muscle contraction. In the absence of calcium, the myosin head is covered by tropomyosin and no muscle contraction occur.

    The presence of calcium ion increases the actin and myosin bridging by the removal of tropomyosin. This process is energy dependent and requires ATP for its continuation. The intake of caffeine increase the calcium level and results in the ease in musce contraction. This calcium elevation do not have the ability to elevate the lipase and protease ads this activation requires specific messengers.
